Sorghum Valley

As you stroll over the old covered bridge, the entrance to Sorghum Valley, you’ll hear the trickle of water as it passes over the rocks below. The beauty of this old structure combined with the feel of a cool evening breeze tends to relax and set the mood for an enchanting trip to the past. For you see, this bridge serves as the Dyer County Fair’s time machine to the past.
As you exit the bridge the transformation in time is complete. You will immediately notice the rustic log cabin with its cistern for water and the dog run in the center – a scene from Dyer County’s pioneer days. The sweet sounds of bluegrass and gospel music can be heard throughout the valley.
A tour down Sorghum Valley’s wooden sidewalk gives you a glimpse of yesteryear’s businesses. Enter Sorghum Valley’s General Store, a replica from the early 1900’s. Browse the items from floor to ceiling. One door down is the office of Drs. Watson and Watson. Many of the items within are from Dyersburg’s first hospital that opened in 1905. Next to it is City Drug Co., founded in Dyersburg in 1884.
The beauty of the First Citizens National Bank building will lure you to its front door. Beside it is the replica of Forcom-Lannom’s First place of business. The office of Sorghum Valley Weekly, with its ancient printing press in operation, along with photos from the past will certainly catch your attention. Sorghum Valley’s Barber Shop, the jail with a cell from Dyersburg’s first jail, the Dyersburg Cotton Products exhibit with one of their machines from its opening in 1928, and our Post Office all combine to make this visit to the past a reality.
I’m sure you will want to visit the Sorghum Valley church. Then if you want to relax and gaze across this beautiful tree filled valley, simply walk over to the Security Bank Pavilion and relax in a swing or on a bale of hay!
